MemoRail Modbus Troubleshooting

This video provides basic troubleshooting tips on your Memosens measurement loop when using the Knick MemoRail Modbus DIN rail mounted transmitter.

Compact Transmitter

MemoRail Modbus is a simple compact digital transmitter with Modbus RTU protocol. This allows access to all read and write parameters for monitoring of the measurement values as well as diagnostic values. It’s available in both single and dual channel formats. The DIP switches on the front of the device carry out Modbus addressing and data format configuration.

LED Indications

Two LEDs serve as a visual display of the measurement status. Let’s review the different phases of the LEDs. A solid green light indicates that the device is in measuring mode with no measurement errors. You can expect the green LED to remain illuminated during normal operation. A solid red light without activation of the green LED indicates a device failure of the MemoRail Modbus transmitter. If this occurs please contact your local sales representative to have the device returned for evaluation and repair.

A blinking red light with the green LED also illuminated indicates a sensor parameter error. First check to ensure that the sensor is connecting properly to the Memosens cable. This error may also indicate an issue with the connected sensor. The Knick Portavo portable meter is a great tool to help you further diagnose and address sensor issues. If the red LED is slowly and steadily flashing, this indicates a communication error between the Memosens sensor and MemoRail Modbus transmitter. Ensure that all leads of the Memosens cable are properly landed and that your cable is not damaged.

Communication Errors

Modbus communication is a simple master/slave protocol. When troubleshooting communication errors between the MemoRail Modbus transmitter and Modbus master or control system, it’s important to first verify that all communication settings between the Modbus transmitter and Modbus master match. Remember that the default baud rate for MemoRail Modbus is 19,200 with the data formatting of 1 start bit, 8 data bits, even parity, and 1 stop bit. If these settings along with the device address do not match the settings in the Modbus master software, communication errors will occur.

To change the settings on your transmitter, use the DIP switches on the front of the device along with the DTM software. These steps will help ensure seamless integration of your Memosens measuring loop when using the MemoRail Modbus transmitter by Knick.
